Bieber Beaten By NHS Choir To Christmas No 1
Justin Bieber has been beaten to the UK's official Christmas number one spot by the NHS Choir after he urged his fans to back their charity single.

The Lewisham and Greenwich choir said they were "absolutely overwhelmed" that their song, A Bridge Over You, had pipped Bieber's track, Love Yourself.

Speaking to Sky News, moments after hearing the news, one of the choir said: "It's a amazing, absolutely amazing - we got to number 1.

Two of the choir celebrate their success

"We were hopeful, very hopeful, but, this is a dream come true."

Their recording had combined chart sales of more than 127,000 copies against the Canadian star's 97,000.

Bieber was quick to congratulate the choir, tweeting: "Just heard the news. Amazing. That is what Christmas is all about. @Choir_NHS congrats!! Very cool."

The 21-year-old had called on his fans to "do the right thing" and support the choir’s single earlier this week when he tweeted that "for one week it's OK not to be number one".

He added: "This is what it's all about. Merry Christmas."

Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company, said: "There will be thousands of NHS staff across the country working through Christmas Day, while the rest of the nation is putting its feet up - this success is for them.

"There couldn't be a more deserving group of winners."

so for 1 week it's ok not to be #1. Let's do the right thing & help them win. It's Christmas. @Choir_NHS good luck https://t.co/ORCtFY1k4i

Proceeds from the choir’s single will go to a number of charities including Carers UK and Mind.

It was the tightest battle since 2009, when Rage Against The Machine took the honour from X Factor winner Joe McElderry.

Bieber, whose latest album Purpose is enjoying huge success, still holds a strong chart presence with three of his songs in second, third and fifth positions in the official chart.

Adele, meanwhile, has scored the biggest-selling album of Christmas week for 2015 - 25 has been number one for five weeks, with sales in the week before Christmas of 450,000.
