Mourinho has not lost job because of past glories

Image
The Blues boss has endured a nightmare 2015-16 season thus far, the Blues having fallen to their eighth league defeat of the season on Saturday, leading to pressure on the manager. Chelsea  great Ray Wilkins believes the only reason that  Jose Mourinho  has been spared the sack is his past achievements at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho has won three Premier League titles and as many League Cup trophies in two spells in west London, but the Portugueuse has endured a nightmare 2015-16 thus far. Chelsea slumped to their eighth league defeat of the season on Saturday, as they were beaten 1-0 at home by newly promoted AFC Bournemouth, and they are now 17 points adrift of leaders Leicester City, with Wilkins insisting that defeat to Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday may spell the end of Mourinho's second reign. "Any other manager would have gone, there are no two ways about it. Mourinho is only still there, purely and simply, for what he's done in the past," Wilkins

Ronaldo breaks Champions League record with 10th and 11th group-stage goals

Image
The Real Madrid forward breaks his own jointly held record to net double figures in a single season of the competition's first round, netting a hat-trick against Malmo. Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first player to score 10 goals in the group stage of a Champions League campaign. The Portugal international achieved the feat with his third goal as his side thumped Malmo 8-0 on Tuesday and netted a fourth soon afterwards. Ronaldo was previously the joint holder of the record with nine, alongside Luiz Adriano, but now becomes the outright leader after top-scoring in the group stage for the fifth time - also a record that no other player can match.  In scoring the 50th-minute goal that took him over the record, Ronaldo followed up earlier strikes in the 37th and 47th minutes for an 11-minute blitz, the fastest hat-trick that any Madrid player has scored in Europe since 1968.

Madrid rout proves I'm not defensive - Benitez

Image
After coming under pressure in recent weeks, the Real Madrid coach believes his side's demolition of Malmo was the perfect retort to claims he is overly defensive. Rafael Benitez  says  Real Madrid 's crushing 8-0 Champions League win over Malmo on Tuesday serves as proof he is not a defensive coach. Benitez witnessed Madrid produce a devastating attacking display in their final Champions League group stage match, setting a club record for the biggest margin of victory in the competition. Cristiano Ronaldo bettered his own record for goals scored in a single group stage, the Portugal international netting four times in the space of 19 minutes to take his tally to 11. His performance overshadowed that of Karim Benzema, who scored a hat-trick, while Mateo Kovacic found the net for the first time in a Madrid shirt. A 4-0 home loss to Barcelona and the Copa del Rey controversy that has seen Madrid kicked out of the tournament for fielding an ineligible player has led to i

Ancelotti reveals interest in managing Man Utd

Image
The 56-year-old was linked with a move to Old Trafford in 2014, before Louis van Gaal landed the role, and has now admitted his interest in the club. Carlo Ancelotti  has confessed that he would like to return to the Premier League and indicated that managing  Manchester United  would be an interesting proposition. The 56-year-old, who has been out of work since leaving his role at Real Madrid in May 2015, has previously expressed his interest in returning to management in the Premier League. Ancelotti had been linked with a return to England - and the hot-seat at Old Trafford - in 2014 after David Moyes' dismissal, yet saw Louis van Gaal instead land the position. But he has now revealed his interest in managing the Old Trafford club. "Of course, for every manager, they would all think of managing Manchester United," he told The Independent. "But I have no regrets about staying at Real because I really enjoyed Madrid. I would like to come back in a club with a g

Ronaldo on PSG links: I'm very happy in Madrid

Image
After hitting four goals against Malmo in an 8-0 rout in the Champions League on Tuesday, the Portuguese international insisted he is content with life in Spain Record-breaking  Cristiano Ronaldo  has repeated that he is happy at  Real Madrid , while insisting he is not obsessed with the Ballon d'Or. The striker rediscovered his best form in front of goal with four strikes in an 8-0 demolition of Malmo on Tuesday, with Karim Benzema also grabbing a hat-trick.  Ronaldo also broke the record for the most goals in a Champions League group stage, reaching 11 this year.  "It is just speculation, it happens every year," he told  Atresmedia  after Tuesday's game, referring to rumours linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.  "In a way people are used to this always happening around Cristiano. I am good, I feel good in a club that has helped me a lot since I arrived and I am very happy here."  While Ronaldo was included alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar in

Tactically outdated Mourinho must reinvent himself - just like Guardiola

Image
"During our first team meeting at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho didn't talk much about tactics. In tactical terms, you just have to look at how he eliminated Barcelona in the Champions League with Inter in 2010 by playing defensive, counter-attacking football. Despite all the talented players he has had at his disposal, the recent years have shown that he has probably become outdated tactically.” This was the damning response of an ex-Mourinho player when asked by  Goal  if his former Madrid mentor was to blame for Chelsea’s disastrous season. The player in question asked to remain anonymous - he is active and may have to work with Mourinho again. But he is not alone in his criticism of the Chelsea boss. There have been numerous theories as to why the flailing Premier League champions, who sit just two points above the relegation zone following Saturday’s humiliating home loss to Bournemouth, have collapsed so spectacularly this campaign. Is Mourinho suffering from third season

Dream Team in thorny battle against Les Lionceaux

Image
The hosts are looking to set up a final match against either Algeria or South Africa but Siasia’s side should not be undervalued. Senegal have quickly established themselves outstanding favorites to win the 2015 African U23 Championship having gone emerged stunningly from a dangerous group, yet in semi-final opponents Nigeria they face a treacherous task. Not only will the hosts have to battle their cross-country foes, they also have the elements in their favour in Dakar’s Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor. A win for either team will translate to a place in the final plus an Olympics ticket with a game to spare. Coach Samson Siasia has made a late change to his squad, with Eyo Ebong replacing Taiwo Awoniyi in the attack with Godspower Tower coming on for Augustine Dimgba. Siasia knows how tough qualifying will be for his team, who come into their meeting with Serigne Saliou Dia’s lads on the back of two straight draws. “I would have preferred to play Senegal in the final but I ha
