The Frenchman leaves the club fifth in Serie A, seven points off table-topping Napoli, with Luciano Spalletti widely expected to return to the Stadio Olimpico as his successor

Roma have parted company with head coach Rudi Garcia, the club announced in a statement on Wednesday. The Giallorossi had begun the Serie A season with hopes of claiming the title from Juventus, but a poor start hampered their progress, falling behind Napoli, Inter and the Bianconeri. With their form failing to pick up, the former Lille boss has now left Rome, and, in a statement on the club's official website, president James Pallotta suggested it is "the right time for a change". "On behalf of myself and everyone at AS Roma, I’d like to thank Rudi Garcia for all of his hard work since joining the club," the statement read. "We’ve all enjoyed some great moments during his time at Roma but we believe that this is the right time for a change." Former Roma coach Luciano Spalletti is widely expected to succeed Garcia, who leaves with the club fifth in the Serie A standings and seven points off table-topping Napoli.

Mass graves, missing children: Evidence of brutality in Iraqi town of Sinjar

Image
Sinjar is yielding up its secrets -- the whispers of those who prayed as they were killed. Grief for those captured and never seen again. Mahama al-Shangali is the mayor of this town of fewer than 90,000 people in northern Iraq, in the heart of Yazidi country. When ISIS swept through the Yazidi homeland, it was along the road into Sinjar that men, women and children who had been rounded up from the surrounding villages were driven. Evidence of a massacre As the mayor walks us to the other side of the heaped earth defenses that encircle the town, he tells us this was the site of an ISIS massacre. This is where they buried the young men, the women and the boys -- children, really -- who refused to accompany ISIS. Who refused to be conscripted by the terrorist group as child soldiers. Witnesses tell CNN that the victims in in these graves, more than 130 of them, had been selected to be taken to the nearby ISIS-controlled town of Tal Afar. But they refused to go

Istanbul bomber registered in Turkey but not on wanted list

Image
A suicide bomber who killed himself and 10 German tourists in Istanbul's historic heart had registered with Turkish immigration authorities but was not on any list of known militant suspects, Turkey's interior minister said on Wednesday. The bomber, an Islamic State member thought to have come recently from Syria, blew himself up on Tuesday in Sultanahmet square near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, major tourist sites in one of the world's most visited cities. Asked about a report in the Turkish media that the bomber had registered at an immigration office in Istanbul a week ago, Interior Minister Efkan Ala confirmed that the man's fingerprints were on record with the Turkish authorities. "Your assessment that his fingerprints were taken and there is a record of him is correct. But he was not on the wanted individuals list. And neither is he on the target individuals list sent to us by other countries," Ala tol

Fifa sacks secretary general

World football's governing body Fifa has dismissed secretary general Jerome Valcke. The Frenchman, 55, was provisionally suspended from football for his alleged involvement in a scheme to profit from the sale of World Cup tickets. He was released from his duties on 17 September after being accused of a series of Fifa ethics code breaches. Appointed in 2007, the former right-hand man of Fifa president Sepp Blatter has denied any wrongdoing. "The duties of the secretary general will continue to be assumed by the acting secretary general, Dr Markus Kattner," read a Fifa statement. Fifa's ethics committee said on 7 January that it had decided to open "formal adjudicatory proceedings" against Valcke after studying a report submitted by its investigatory chamber. Valcke has also been accused of being party   to a potential £6.8m ($10m)

IS claims suicide attack on Pakistan consulate in Afghan city

Islamic State claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday that was followed by a deadly gun battle lasting several hours. Afghan officials said all three attackers and at least seven members of the security forces died during the attack by the radical Islamist movement which has so far avoided striking high-profile Pakistani targets. The attack, which comes amid efforts to restart the stalled peace process with the Taliban and ease diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, resembled an assault on the Indian consulate in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif last week. Witnesses in Jalalabad, the main trade gateway to the Khyber Pass and Pakistan, said heavy gunfire and a series of explosions could be heard during the battle and residents and children from a nearby school were evacuated. Nangarhar, the province in which Jalalabad is located, has become the main Afghan stronghold of Islam

Iran released U.S. sailors in international waters

Image
Iran released ten U.S. sailors on Wednesday after holding them overnight, bringing a swift end to an incident that had rattled nerves days ahead of the expected implementation of a landmark nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said it had freed the sailors after determining they had entered Iranian territorial waters by mistake. The sailors had been detained aboard two U.S. Navy patrol boats in the Gulf on Tuesday. "Our technical investigations showed the two U.S. Navy boats entered Iranian territorial waters inadvertently," the IRGC said in a statement carried by state television. "They were released in international waters after they apologized," it added. IRGC Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi had earlier said that the two U.S. Navy boats entered Iranian territorial waters due to a broken navigation system. The incident raised tensions between Ir

Donald Trump criticizes 'boring' State of the Union address

Donald Trump was not impressed with President Obama's final State of the Union address Tuesday night. The GOP presidential front-runner sent a couple of tweets to his more than 5.6 million followers during the almost hourlong speech. In addition to his criticisms, Trump shared poll numbers showing that he was at the head of the Republican pack. "I'm winning against Hillary one-on-one," Trump said. "And I haven't even started on her yet, although last week I did a little bit. But we haven't even started."

Obama’s State of the Union: America is already great

Image
President Barack Obama used his final State of the Union speech on Tuesday to acknowledge American anxieties about the economy and national security while delivering a defiant, campaign-style rejection of Republican charges that he will leave his successor a country that is poorer, weaker, and under siege from the Islamic State. Without ever naming them, Obama took shots at GOP presidential candidates like Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. He mocked Republicans as “lonely” deniers of climate change and accused them of “peddling fiction” about his economic record and blowing “political hot air” about foreign dangers to America, including ISIS. For a president who insists he’s glad not to be running for reelection, Obama sounded eager to mix it up with his critics — and anxious to win back Americans, who, by large majorities, tell pollsters that the country is heading in the wrong direction as his consequential two-term presidency draws to a close.
